St. George church in Naqada

The church land was bought in 1955 by the late Father Ezekiel Yacoub. The Thrice-Blessed, H.G. Bishop Samuel, General Bishop of Public, Ecumenical and Social Services played a key role to obtain the necessary license to build the church and a republican decree was issued in 1976.  Originally, the church was built entirely of wood.

On September 11, 1986, the Thrice-Blessed, H.G. Bishop Makarios, Bishop of Qena, Naqada and Qus consecrated the church which later became the seat of the Diocese of Naqada and Qus.

A guest house which later became the administrative offices for the diocese as well as a 5-storey service building were also built together with St. Verena’s residence for the consecrated women.  Both the church and the diocese building were restored by H.G. Bishop Biemen.
