Hegumen Armanios Abdullah Al-Majber was instrumental in building this church, which was consecrated by the late Anba Abram, Bishop of Luxor, Armant, Esna and Aswan in 1962.  Church services continued until 1972 when the church was shut down for more than forty years due to security reasons.  During that period, it became the headquarters of the Diocese of Qena. 

With great effort and despite many challenges, H.G. Bishop Beimen, Bishop of Naqada and Qus managed to completely reconstruct and reopen the church for prayers and services in 2016.
